How Black Leather Jackets Remain Timeless.

The thing that brings most people’s minds spinning up fond memories is black leather jackets. Maybe your ex-boyfriend rode his motorcycle and with your face pressed against his back you would take in that distinctive leather aroma. Beer filled concerts of rock and roll shows past with talent clothed in black leather. Something of a mystique but present everywhere it is an icon in apparel trends.

Think back to the films of James Dean. Many people might recognize the famous photograph of him standing next to his Porsche in his black leather jacket smoking a cigarette. It becomes quite difficult to forget such images once you see them. Pilots have been known to wear black leather jackets. The wool lined ones specific for the super cold weather brings back memories of old War films. Despite all of this, the image of black leather jackets is changing.

Upscale retailers are selling designer jackets in their stores. The motorcycle riders once associated with Harley's are changing to Street Bikes. But yet the majority still prefer the leather, and even black over other colours such as brown. Leather provides durability unmatched by other materials favoured by those who ride their motorcycles.

Gone are the days of patches sewn on all over representing your club affiliation, everything is moving towards simplicity. Even as the New York designer sells their jackets, they are simple, and yet sometimes thin. Something you would not find hanging in your father or grandfathers closet.

Ultimately these garments are here to stay. Made popular by movies, worn by rock and rollers, it is very hard not to stir up any memories when you think about these jackets. I believe the rebel feel has been accepted into something more mainstream, and fashion designers will profit. Maybe we too are all a little rebellious in our own hearts.

Leather Jackets For Women, Making The Right Choice.

From the nineteen thirties onwards, leather jackets for women have become an essential part of the fashionable wardrobe the world over. Whether you favour the casual look of the cropped zip up, the biker jacket or the full length trench coat there seems to be a look for every size, shape, season and budget. There is almost infinite choice in colour, quality, and style available in the market today.

When deciding on what type to choose there are several considerations. Different grades vary dramatically in appearance, price and durability. Garments may sometimes be made from calf or lamb hide which is much softer but generally a lot more expensive. Though very beautiful, these softer hides are often more easily damaged, difficult to maintain and not nearly as hard wearing. They are a popular choice for leather jackets for women nonetheless as they have a particular luxurious look and feel.

On the other end of the scale there have been marked improvements in the texture and appearance of cheaper items of clothing. With the introduction of new treatments some are now washable, removing the need for expensive specialist cleaning.

The most prestigious fashion houses of the world seldom show a new collection without at least one or two examples of cutting edge designs of leather jackets for women. The rich and famous of the past and present are often photographed in public wearing anything from the classic, vintage flying jacket to the latest offering by a chic designer label. That owning one appeals across the generations, may be in some part due to the iconic pictures of Elvis Presley and James Dean.

Throughout the last few decades the strong imagery associated with the look has been used to great effect by female musicians. Cher, Suzie Quattro, Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Pat Benetar and Madonna were frequently pictured wearing them and the starlets of today seem to be following that tradition. Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears have both favoured the Rock Chick look on occasion. Leather jackets for women are a fashion item that seems to be here to stay.

Why Do We Call Them Gothic Coats?

This goes back to the days of the Goths, who were a tribe of people that were part of the East Germanic subculture which was influential in bringing down the Roman Empire. In the middle ages, the Goths were considered uncultured and barbarian by people of the Renaissance period whose standard of living had greatly improved. Now what has this got to do with gothic coats you may ask.

Well, the Renaissance people's thoughts on the Goths continued on until late 18th century when Horace Walpole wrote a romantic novel about the Goth culture which glamorized the Goths and people started to think more favourably about them. The book was morbid as well and referred to grave yards, vampires and ghosts and other things that the modern day "goth" culture is fascinated with.

During the mid 1900's a spate of movies and TV series emerged that featured the types of people that Walpole wrote about. These characters from The Addams Family, The Monsters and Count Dracula all had one thing in common; they all wore gothic trench coats.

When punk music first started in the 1980's a dark culture began with it and this was the beginnings of the modern day Goth. Being more affluent at this time, Goths could afford better quality clothing and they began wearing leather gothic coats and leather gothic coats for women were very much in demand. The jackets have become a trademark of the Goth.

The image that Goths try to promulgate is one of darkness and gloom and they add to their black clothing with the use of black make up, especially around the eyes. Another specialty of Goths is piercing. Pierced ears, eyebrows, noses, lips and even cheeks and they all have rings or some other metal item attached.

Mens leather gothic coats can be distinguished by the slim fit, extra length and it is black; it's supposed to make them look attractive. The aura which they try to portray makes you wonder if modern day Goths really understand where their gothic coats and associated apparel really come from.

Sales of leather jackets have increased online, which is no surprise due the items versatility and ability to survive in the fashion circuit.

Throughout history, the jacket was associated with bikers, rock stars and punks. They were also commonly used for military aviator and police uniforms, which were versions designed for protection rather than fashion. By the 20th Century, it had gained iconic status and became popular with British and American youth. This was mainly thanks to the film and television industry who at the time, portrayed well liked, fashionable characters wearing them.

It was originally worn and designed for men but is now a major fashion item for both men and women throughout the world, with the only differences between them mostly in relation to fit and style.

They are usually made in dark colours, with black and brown leather jackets being the most commonly seen. However, the jacket has been produced in a variety of different versions and styled in diverse ways depending on its purpose and also, the subculture it has been adopted by.

There are huge differences between those made for protection and those for fashion. Whatever its purpose, the jacket have never really gone out of fashion, although it has been reinterpreted and adjusted depending on current social and fashion trends.

The leather jacket has always been a big seller during the winter months.
